La magn\u00e9tite (Fe3O4), l'h\u00e9matite (Fe2O3), la goethite, la limonite ou la sid\u00e9rite sont les minerais de fer que l'on trouve habituellement, et l'h\u00e9matite et le cuivre sont les minerais les plus couramment exploit\u00e9s. Les m\u00e9t\u00e9orites de fer contiennent g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement du nickel et on pense qu'elles proviennent de corps accr\u00e9t\u00e9s de 1 000 km de diam\u00e8tre ou plus. Ces derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es, la production mondiale de minerai de fer a augment\u00e9 r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la demande croissante d'acier, la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 mini\u00e8re br\u00e9silienne Vale \u00e9tant le plus grand producteur mondial.
